CWS Malaysia receives the biggest contribution of RM20,000 from the school

THE constant advise by Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur’s principal Mrs Vimala Mathews to her 950 students that “community service is a lifetime commitment” was probably the motivational factor behind the very successful fundraiser which has benefited six organizations related to children welfare.

A whopping RM62,282.00 was raised by the Wesley Methodist School Interact Club’s recent cross-country jogathon in February.

“It’s a good feeling when you have helped someone in need. We encourage compassion for others,” she said.

The Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia was the biggest beneficiary from the fundraiser with a RM20,000 contribution to help it fulfill wishes of children who are stricken with life-threatening and terminal illnesses in the country.

CWS board member Alan Yip who received the cheque said the organization was humbled by the efforts put in by “youths for youths”.

“The students have shown that nothing is impossible for them to achieve if they set their hearts and minds to it.”

“This contribution is an honor to receive from the school. It will allow us to bring more smiles to children who are stricken with life threatening and terminal illnesses,” he said.

Last year, the club donated RM12,500 to CWS.

Interact Club community service director, 17-year-old Jonathan Lee was all smiles during the whole cheque presentation ceremony although he admitted later that seeking sponsors for the 7km jogathon was the hardest.

“Apart from getting sponsors, members spent time preparing the cloth tags for the run. We made it ourselves with spray paint and cloth.”

“Students were given donation cards a few weeks before the event to collect money. Each student collected a minimum of RM35,” he said, adding that the club decided to donate the bigger share to CWS because they wanted the children’s last wishes to be fulfilled.

Three other organizations received RM10,000 each. Among them were Rumah Victory and Semoa.

Another two organizations, Wings Malacca and Pusat Bantuan Sentul received RM5,000 each.

Kota Kinabalu: Although a Sabahan, Nur Hidayah Aziz had never seen an Orang Utan, the State’s tourism mascot.

But the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia (CWS) decided that this cancer-stricken lass should not be denied the opportunity and arranged a visit to Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort wildlife reserve in Tuaran last month.

Hidayah, who is suffering from bone cancer, wiped away the exhaustion she had felt moments earlier from the climb to the feeding platform where two juvenile orang utans put on an acrobatic display.

Hidayah is getting treatment in Kuala Lumpur and was back to fulfill her wish to visit the State with her mother Misriyah Sulaiman, 52.

“It is the first time that I am seeing orang utans and I am amazed at their agility and their beauty,” Hidayah said.

Hidayah also found the orang utan mugs sold at the Sabah Wildlife Department’s gift shop enticing, so much so that she bought several pieces for her siblings.

She is due to visit Pulau Manukan for some snorkelling before leaving for KL.

On her first night in Sabah, Hidayah, Misriyah and CWS Malaysia board members were hosted to a dinner by Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Dato’ Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin.

During the cultural performance, Hidayah and Misriyah also got a chance to participate in some of the dances with the performers.

CWS thanked Air Asia, Promenade Hotel KK and Sabah Tourism Board for helping make Hidayah’s visit complete.

“It is our hope to be able to fulfill more wishes in Sabah with the cooperation and support of the State Government, corporate sector and members of the public in the near future,” said Alan Yip, a board member.

CWS Malaysia fulfills four wishes and brings more cheer to 30 kids in Malacca General Hospital

MALACCA….Pre-Christmas visitors to the Malacca General Hospital brought a lot of smiles and laughter to more than 30 children warded at the children’s ward recently.

Four children in particular were granted their wishes by the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia who made the trip to Malacca to present them their wish while giving out presents to the other children warded in the hospital.

Jaslyn Khoo, 5 who is diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia was presented a laptop to enable her to play games and watch her favourite movies at home or when she is at the hospital for treatment.

Five year old Muhd Raimi Bin Ab Rahman, eight year old Nur Maisarah Bte Abd Rahim and seven year old Joseph Pslam were each given an MP3 player to enable them to listen to music and also the radio.

Muhd Raimi is suffering from global development delay while Nur Maisarah is seeking treatment for brainstem tumour and hydrocephalus. Joseph is suffering from global developmental delay epilepsy ( semizoencephalus Type II).

“We received the wishes from the four children a week earlier and we decided since we were making the trip to Malacca, why not spread the cheer with other children?”

“CWS is the first-ever organization which looks at fulfilling wishes of children who are stricken with life-threatening or terminal illnesses in the country,” Alan Yip said, adding that more wish granting will continue to be carried out in 2010 throughout the country.

Yip said the organization worked with doctors in hospitals to help identify potential recipients below the age of 18 who are seeking treatment for their condition.

Thirteen-year-old Alicia Loh realizes her dream to be a published writer thanks to MPH Group of Companies and Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, DEC 15 2009…..Wishes do come true! For 13-year-old Alicia Loh, her wish was fulfilled today with the debut of her book “The Last Chapter”.
Alicia currently undergoes regular treatment for spinal muscular atrophy type 2, a nerve and muscular disease that is progressive and incurable.
Her wish which was conveyed to the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia, was transformed into reality with the help of MPH Group of Companies who extended a helping hand to publish her book.
Her debut novella is The Last Chapter, a story about blossoming and broken relationships.
CWS Malaysia president Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam who launched the book together with Dato’ Ng Tieh Chuan, CEO OF MPH Group of Companies Malaysia and Alicia said the society was happy to be able to fulfill yet another wish of a child and bring cheer to her life.
“CWS is a very young organization but we continue to pursue our objectives of bringing a smile back to children around us who are stricken with life-threatening and terminal illnesses across the country.”
“Today, together with our partner MPH, we have made another wish come true,” he said.
Navaratnam said the society hoped more corporations and individuals will come forward to share the smiles around by helping CWS fulfill more wishes.
The society has fulfilled the wishes of children from as far north as Kedah, Kuala Lumpur to Melaka and Johor and also in Sabah and Sarawak.
